Words of the Week: #7

Words of the Week: #7

1) Sight Words- printed words stored in memory by the reader that can be read immediately, "at first sight," without having to use decoding strategies.

(Bear, Donald R., et al. Words their Way, Pearson, 2020.)

Sight words are very important because a lot of those words are used often in reading and writing. It also promotes reading comprehension and they can help provide clues to the context of the text. A child may be familiar with the word, and therefore they may be able to decode the meaning of it by reading it and the text surrounding that word.

2) Schwa- a vowel sound in English that often occurs in an unstressed syllable, such as the /uh/ sound in the first syllable of the word above.

(Bear, Donald R., et al. Words their Way, Pearson, 2020.)

A schwa is important because tons of words in the English language have one. You have to be able to pronounce words that have a schwa. Otherwise, when you speak your diction will be off and people won't understand you. Additionally, I believe that knowing how to pronounce a schwa in a word can help promote reading comprehension and the ability to read smoothly.

3) Digraph- two letters that represent one sound. There are consonant digraphs and vowel digraphs, though the term most commonly refers to consonant digraphs. Common consonant digraphs include sh, ch, th, and wh. Consonant digraphs at the beginning of words are onsets.

(Bear, Donald R., et al. Words their Way, Pearson, 2020.)

Digraphs are important because they plainly are common. They are found in a lot of words in the English language and it's important for children to recognize them and pronounce those words with digraphs in them. Knowing about digraphs can also improve spelling.

4) Blend- a phonics term for an orthographic unit of two or three letters at the beginning or end of words that are blended together. There are l-blends such as bl, cl, and fl; r-blends such as gr, tr, and pr; s-blends such as ft, rd, and st. Every sound represented in a blend is pronounced, if only briefly.

(Bear, Donald R., et al. Words their Way, Pearson, 2020.)

As I said before with digraphs, blends are common in the English language. They are overall important for reading comprehension, spelling, and fluency.

5) Phonograms- often called word families, phonograms end in rimes that vary only in the beginning consonant sound to make a word. For example, back, sack, black, and track are phonograms with the rime -ack.

(Bear, Donald R., et al. Words their Way, Pearson, 2020.)

Phonograms are important because students can recognize patterns within words. They can improve their spelling skills as well and sort these words.

6) Onset- the initial consonant(s) sound of a single syllable or word. The onset of the word sun is /s/. The onset of the word slide is /sl/.

(Bear, Donald R., et al. Words their Way, Pearson, 2020.)

Onset can help students recognize chunk within words. It can help students decode words and help with spelling as well when a student practices and studies words. Additionally, I wanted to add that students can categorize words based on their onset in a word sort.

7) Rime- a unit composed of the vowel and any following consonants within a syllable. For example, the rime unit in the word tag is ag.

(Bear, Donald R., et al. Words their Way, Pearson, 2020.)

Rime can also help students identify chunks within words and words with rime can be used in word sorts. If a child can recognize rime, it can help improve spelling as well.
